Singer songwriter Martin Messent takes in folk, alt. country and fingerstyle playing, uniting these with a love of jazz and Americana and a lyrical, freewheeling approach to songwriting rooted in classic form.
Influences include Nick Drake, Davy Graham, Neil Young and Paul Simon.
He’s appeared at Bestival and Glastonbury; The Greys, Brighton; 12 Bar Club and The Green Note, London, among numerous dates at popular UK acoustic venues and is currently promoting his third solo album, Try To Begin, out now.
He often plays live as a duo with Mike Simmonds (Alice Russell, Bonobo) on violin and mandolin.
"From the mournful loss of ‘Angel Dust’ through the quiet resignation of ‘Rising Early’ to the tender ‘Close My Eyes’ ...a collection of songs filled with acute reflection, depth and keen observations."

Angels and Jackals
"Dark yet full of creativity and imagination ...with his acoustic guitar entwined with the sound of Mike Simmonds' viola, something beautiful and shining can be heard. ...Martin knows how to make his song real and personal. This artist is full of creativity and wonder.”
